Court denies bail to Sivasankar in gold smuggling case

Kochi, Nov 17 (UNI) A court here on Tuesday denied bail to the suspended IAS officer M Sivasankar in an Enforcement Directorate (ED) case related to the diplomatic baggage gold smuggling scam.
Justice Kausser Edappagath of Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court refused to grant relief to Sivasankar while upholding the arguments of ED which is probing the money tail of the smuggling racket.
Sivasankar, arrested by ED on October 28, was in the custody of the central agency for the past 19 days. He has been remanded till November 26.
The investigating agency argued that Sivasankar might try to sabotage the case and could go into hiding if
granted bail. He was one of the most important IAS officers in Kerala.
Sivasankar handled very important responsibilities at the chief minister's office. If he is granted bail, he will try to influence the witnesses, ED said in the court.
The probe agency also said unlike a murder which can happen due to sudden provocation, gold smuggling is a crime that is very well planned. An officer who is supposed to protect the trust of the people should not have acted in such a manner.
The relationship between Sivasankar and Swapna Suresh can be proven using their WhatsApp chats. Details about financial transactions were mentioned in the chats.
Sivasankar knew about Swapna's financial situation. In this context, Sivasankar's argument that he did not know about the gold smuggling is not believable, ED stated.
