Covid pandemic: Odisha bans Chhat puja, mass bathing vat river banks

Bhubaneswar, Nov16 (UNI) The Odisha government has prohibited the celebration of Chhat puja including mass bathing at the river banks and ghats in the public interest to contain the spread of coronavirus.
A notification in this regard was issued (in public interest) by the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) on Monday, which will remain in force during November 20 and 21, 2020.
The SRC order said the state is passing through a critical stage of Covid pandemic and it is necessary to strictly adhere to the covid safe protocols for containment of the spread of virus.
The government felt that since the Chhat puja is approaching there will be a large congregation of people at the river bank/ghats in the state and such congregation has the potential for spread of covid infection.
The Government has advised the devotees to avoid public gatherings and perform the rituals at home adhering to safety protocols like social distancing norms, use of mask and sanitizers.
Any person found violating the government order would be punished as per law, the notification said
The restriction was imposed in exercise of power conferred under section 24 (I) of Disaster Management Act-2005.
The state government had also earlier imposed similar restrictions on observance of Durga Puja and Laxmi puja and banned the sale and use of crackers in Diwali in a bid to prevent the spread of covid.
