Nitish Kumar: The journey so far

  • Nitish Kumar was first sworn in as CM in 2000. The term lasted barely a week because of lack of majority
  • Five years later, he returned with the JD(U)-BJP alliance winning a majority.
  • He returned in 2010 when the coalition won a landslide victory in the assembly polls.
  • He stepped down in May, 2014, owning moral responsibility for the JD(U)s debacle in Lok Sabha polls, only to return in February, 2015.
  • In November, 2015, he was part of the Grand Alliance which then comprised JD(U), Lalu Prasads RJD and Congress. Kumar came back as Chief Minister.
  • He exited the Grand Alliance in July, 2017, and returned as CM with BJP support.
  • In December 2020, he returned as CM with a narrow majority despite an anti-incumbency.

Nitish Kumar takes oath as chief minister for 4th consecutive term

  • Nitish Kumar has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the seventh time - and 4th consecutive term - in two decades.
  • Kumar was administered the oath of office at Raj Bhavan by Governor Phagu Chauhan.
  • The 69-year-old, who has had a continuous run since November, 2005, except between 2014-15 when Jitan Ram Manjhi was CM.
  • He was sworn in in the presence of Union Home minister Amit Shah and BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda.

Bihar assembly election results: Where parties stand

  • The NDA defeated the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan 125 to 110 when results to the 243 assembly seats were announced
  • The BJP is the largest party within the ruling coalition with 74 seats, followed by JD-U (43) and Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) four each.
  • The Grand Alliance bagged 110 seats out of which RJD accounted for 75 while Congress tally was 19, CPI-ML (12) and CPI and CPI(M) two each.
  • The BJP had announced before the polls that Kumar will remain chief minister irrespective of which NDA constituent wins the maximum number of seats.
