New Delhi, Nov 16 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday asked petitioner Sameet Thakkar to knock the doors of the Bombay High Court, in connection with his alleged objectionable tweets against Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aditya Thackeray on social media.
"You (Sameet Thakkar) approach the Bombay High Court for relief," a bench of the Apex Court, headed by Chief Justice (CJI) S A Bobde, said.
Thakkar was granted bail by the Magistrate court in Maharashtra, after 21 days in custody over his tweets.
The accused was arrested by the Maharashtra police for allegedly making an objectionable remark (Baby Penguin) against junior Thackeray.
Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, appearing for petitioner Thakkar, submitted to the SC that it is a very unfortunate case. These are bailable offences, yet Thakkar has been put in jail.
The CJI told him, 'Why are you coming here under Article 32 directly?,' and directed the petitioner to go to the High Court instead.
Advocate Rahul Chitnis, representing the Maharashtra government, said his remand ends today.
'We will not be opposing the bail, as his custodial interrogation is over,' added Mr Chitnis.
Mr Jethmalani claimed that his client was treated inhumanely for a tweet and also paraded in public.
