New Delhi: As part of preparations for the upcoming West Bengal assembly polls, five top office-bearers of BJP will travel to different zones this week to collect “honest feedback” on the working of the party’s state unit.

In an internal assembly assessment exercise initiated by BJP national organisation secretary BL Santhosh and party president JP Nadda, senior party leaders such as Sunil Deodhar, Vinod Tawde, Dushyant Gautam, Satish Dwivedi and Vinod Sonkar were picked to tour different parts of West Bengal, These leaders will talk to office-bearers, representatives from the cadre and understand organisational issues that the party is facing in the state.

The meetings also aim to “instil organisational discipline” in party cadre, talk to them about the challenges they are facing and report the feedback directly to the state leaders. “The party leaders will come as observers to carry out a statewide assessment of district units, block committees and give an honest picture to Delhi leaders,” said a BJP insider.

General secretary of the party’s West Bengal unit Sayantan Basu told ET these meetings are a regular feature of BJP as an organisation but they are increasing in number as the polls are approaching. “The agenda of these meetings is to reach out to district-level workers and also plan our campaign more effectively,” said Basu.

For organisational ease, BJP has divided the state into five zones that include North Bengal, Rarh (south-western), Nabadwip (south-central), Hooghly-Midnapore (southern) and Kolkata. Out of the total 18 seats won by BJP in West Bengal in 2019, 12 were from North Bengal and the tribal areas. While JP Nadda met the party cadre from North Bengal last month, Amit Shah had travelled to the state earlier this month and met representatives from other zones.

Deodhar, credited by the party leadership as one of the key architects of BJP’s victory in Tripura, has been given the responsibility of fixing the electoral strategy for the biggest zone comprising Howrah, Hooghly and Midnapore. This zone comprises around 69 assembly seats. Tawde will travel to Nabadwip while others will travel to the rest of the state this week. Santhosh is also expected to be in the state to oversee these meetings.
