CHENNAI: Two men suffered injuries on Monday morning when a theatre owner at Palani in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu opened fire using his licensed revolver in connection with a property dispute.
Police said Natarajan, owner of Valluvar Theatre, had land dispute with Ilangovan, a farmer in Akkaraipatti village. The dispute is over a piece of land in Appar Street, which is a prime residential area at Palani.
The two had approached a court a few years ago. Judgement had favoured Ilangovan. However, Natarajan has gone for an appeal in a higher court.
On Monday morning , Ilangovan cleaned the place to construct a house.
Natarajan reached the place and picked up a quarrel with Ilangovan . During a heated argument, Natarajan took out his revolver and opened fire, injuring Ilangovan’s relatives Palanisamy and Subramani. A bullet hit Palanisamy’s waist while Subramani suffered injuries on his lower abdomen area.
He said Natarajan opened three rounds in total. While no one was injured when he opened the first round, Palanisamy and Subramani suffered injuries in the second and third rounds, respectively.
Dindigul range deputy inspector general of police M S Muthusamy told TOI that the two were out of danger and are undergoing treatment.
A bullet was removed from Palanisamy's waist. Since Subramani suffered deep injuries, he was shifted to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.
Natarajan also threatened others. Another relative of Ilangovan hurled a piece of wood at Natarajan. Following this, he backed off and left the place.
Natarajan was arrested, and the weapon was seized. Natarajan was a reputed person in the area and there was no criminal antecedent against him before the incident, Muthusamy said.
