Cong leadership 'vacant' after Bihar,UP poll debacle

Lucknow, Nov 16 (UNI) Double whammy of poll debacle in Bihar assembly elections and abysmal performance in by polls to seven assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh has put the leadership of the Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in tight spot.
The two electorally important states together return as many 119 MPs to Lok Sabha. Though there is no protest, the Congress leaders are questioning the hands-on role style of functioning of Priyanka in Uttar Pradesh as it has so far failed to make impact on the electoral fortunes of the party in the largest state.
The Congress remains a fringe player in the electorally most significant state in the country, and in the seven recent by-elections to the UP assembly, its candidates lost deposits on four seats. It garnered just 7.53 per cent vote-share, but did finish second on two seats, Bangarmau and Ghatampur. The state of the organisation of grand old party in UP, and its ability to contest the election can be gauzed from the fact that the nomination papers of the Congress candidate for by poll to Tundla assembly seat was rejected as the papers were not in order.
UP Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu, however, counters and presents the brighter side. “The Congress finished as the runner-up on two seats, and third on one seat. Our vote percentage has also gone up. We have been visibly active as main opposition party in the state. So, it would be wrong to say that the Congress has not become any stronger since Priyanka ji entered the state’s politics, he said here on Monday.” He added, “The Congress has been constantly fighting against the BJP government. We will surely learn the right lessons from these by-election results and will plan ahead and work hard.”
The top leaders from the opposition parties has stayed away from the campaign for the by poll to seven assembly seats in UP. Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj party chief Mayawati did not campaign in these by polls, while the UP chief Minister Yogi Adityanath first addressed virtual meeting of the party cadres in each constituency and later addressed elections meeting in all seven seats.
A senior UP Congress leader said `` in the era of fiercely competitive politics in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress cannot remain a relevant political force with `work from home’ kind of work culture and daily bust fire on social media’’. The leader after the outbreak of the pandemic, Priyanka did interact with some state leaders through video conferencing –there was no direct communication with the grass root workers. ``If the Congress intends to protect its electoral fortune and prevent the repeat of the 2019 Lok sabha poll debacle then the leadership will have to come out from the work from home mode’’, said the Congress leader. Congress could win only the Raibareli Lok Sabha seat in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
BJP spokesperson Dr Chandramohan said: “Both Priyanka Gandhi and (Samajwadi Party chief) Akhilesh Yadav are leaders only on Twitter. This is why BJP has remained at the forefront. Modi ji and Yogi ji are strong everywhere, from the ground level to social media.”
