Chandigarh: Cracker ban cuts injuries by 85%

CHANDIGARH: Government hospitals reported 27 Diwali related injuries on Saturday as compared to 184 last year, a drop of 85% that was credited to the ban on crackers.
PGI reported seven minor cases of fire cracker injury at its Advanced Eye Centre emergency. The trauma centre registered two burn cases with minor injuries. One of them was a man from Mohali, who suffered superficial facial burns and was admitted to plastic surgery ICU. The other was a woman from Una in Himachal Pradesh. She suffered was operated upon. Doctors said the patient was admitted to the trauma centre ICU and was on ventilator support. Out of the total nine patients in PGI, two were from the Tricity.
On the other hand, the emergency at Government multi-specialty Hospital, Sector 16 remained busy on Diwali night, dealing with cases of accidents, minor scuffles, burns and eye injuries. Nine cases were of hand burns with one of feet burn. Eight patients had eye injuries. Dr Swati Sharma, eye surgeon, GMSH, dealt with these patients, including a 23-year-old man from Maloya who was found to have lid and corneal lacerations along with corneal burns. The youngest victim was a 12-year-old girl.
At Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, there was only one case (25-year-old man) of cracker injury.
