New Delhi: BJP has upped the ante in the District Development Council elections of Jammu and Kashmir slated for end of this month by appointing central leaders as in-charge of the polls and cornering the seven parties that form the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) on their demand for restoring special status and statehood to the state.
Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad sought a clarification from National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah for his reported remarks that his party will seek help even from China in restoring special status to J&K. He also targeted PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti for stating that the Indian flag will be respected only after the Jammu and Kashmir flag is restored.
Prasad said demands for bringing back Article 370 are regressive and “anti-national”.
Prasad also slammed the Congress on Article 370 and sought to know from Sonia and Rahul Gandhi on whether they concur with the view of the NC and PDP on restoring the law, which was abrogated by Parliament. The minister termed such demands as acts of treason.
BJP enumerated the various benefits that will accrue to Jammu and Kashmir after the revocation of Article 370. This includes implementation of all-India laws in the border state.
The District Development Council elections are the first polls being held in Jammu and Kashmir since abrogation of Article 370. Moreover, seven parties have joined hands to form the Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) and are demanding restoration of special status and full statehood.
BJP has made these polls a prestige issue and is making all efforts to perform well. In an unprecedented move, the party appointed minister of state for finance Anurag Thakur as in-charge of its election campaign. Former union minister Shahnawaz Hussain and Madhya Pradesh MP Sanjay Bhatia have been made co-incharge. Usually, such local polls are handled by the state unit of the party.
The saffron party is banking on the SC, ST votes as well as the support of women as it feels abrogation of Article 370 helps these segments get reservation benefits and property rights respectively. BJP hopes this will sway these voters to their side.
