10 held for defying cracker ban in Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: Police arrested 10 people for defying cracker ban on Diwali, registering 11 FIRs as compared to 13 last year, when people were allowed to burst crackers from 8pm-10pm only.
Police registered cases under Sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 51 (B) of Disaster Management Act, 2005. Although the offence is bailable, one can spend three months in jail under Section 188 and two years in jail under Section 51.
Maximum five cases were registered in the east division comprising sectors 7, 26, 27, 28 and 29 and Manimajra, Colony Number 4, IT Park and New Indira Colony, according to the data. Sector 26 and IT park police registered two cases each and arrested four persons, while Sector 19 police arrested one person.
South division police registered four FIRs. Sector 36 police registered three cases and arrested one person, while Sector 39 police station registered one case and arrested two persons. Four police stations of the central division registered two FIRs and arrested two persons. Sarangpur police station registered two FIRs and arrested two persons.
In other arrests, three people were caught for allegedly consuming liquor at the public place in Sector 8, Chandigarh. Rakesh Kumar of Dadumajra colony was nabbed from near his house for carrying 25 quarters of country-made liquor. Four people were arrested for allegedly gambling near Dhanas sports complex and Rs 3,050 was recovered from them.
