Nitish Kumar is set to return as chief minister (Photo source: PTI)The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) unanimously elected Janata Dal-United chief Nitish Kumar as its leader on Sunday. With this formal announcement, Kumar will become the next chief minister of the state. This will be his fourth consecutive term as the CM of Bihar. According to reports, the swearing-in ceremony will be held tomorrow. The NDA leaders also decided that Sushil Modi will remain the Deputy CM of the state. The NDA meet was attended by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
The formal announcement by the NDA comes after an informal meeting at Nitish Kumar’s residence on Friday, the first such meet after the Bihar Assembly Election 2020 results were announced on November 10. The meeting was called after Kumar recommended to dissolve the state Assembly by handing over the resignation of his ministry to Bihar Governor Phagu Chauhan. The NDA in Bihar has four constituent parties – JD(U), Bharatiya Janata Party, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), and Vikassheel Insaan Party.
After the meeting, newly elected legislators of the BJP will meet state party chief Sanjay Jaiswal in Patna.
The NDA won 125 seats in the recently concluded state assembly against in the state. Bihar Assembly has 243 seats and 122 seats are needed to cross the halfway mark and form the government. On the other hand, the opposition Grand Alliance managed to win just 110 seats.
Even though the BJP has won 74 seats, much more than its ally JD(U)’s 43, it was almost certain that Nitish Kumar will be the next CM. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too had said that every BJP and NDA worker will make sure that Bihar continues to develop under the leadership of Nitish Kumar.
The JD(U)’s performance in Bihar Assembly Election 2020 is its worst performance in the last 15 years. In the last Assembly election, Kumar’s party had won 71 seats.
According to a report by The Indian Express, Nitish Kumar had expressed his ‘unwillingness’ to continue as the chief minister citing poor performance by the JD(U). Senior BJP leaders assured Kumar that he will have ‘full independence as before.’
Sources said that Kumar was upset over the way Chirag Paswan and his Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) had hurt the JD(U).
