Who is Birsa Munda

Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875 in Bengal Presidency, Ulihatu, Ranchi District, Bihar. This place now falls in the Khunti district of Jharkhand. Munda was an Indian tribal freedom fighter, religious leader, and folk hero who belonged to the Munda tribe. He led a tribal religious movement during the British Raj in the Bengal Presidency (now Jharkhand) in the late 19th century. This made him an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement. This movement was mainly concentrated in the Munda belt of Khunti, Tamar, Sarwar, and Bandon. His picture is present in the museum of the Indian Parliament. He is the only tribal leader to have received this honor. The Government of India also issued a dot ticket in his honor in 1988.
