Kolkata, Nov 15 (UNI) Legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee died of multi-organ failure at 12-15 PM at Belle Vue Clinic today.
"We declare with heavy heart that Shri Soumitra Chattopadhyay breathed his last at 12-15 pm at Belle Vue Clinic today (15 November 2020). We pay our homage to his soul," Belle Vue clinic said.
He was 85 and is survived by his wife Deepa Chatterjee, son Sougata Chatterjee and daughter Poulami Bose.
Chatterjee was admitted to the Belle Vue Clinic on October 6 after he tested Covid-19 positive but later, tested negative.
However, his condition gradually deteriorated as he developed other complications and, finally, after a fight for 40 days he breathed his last today at 12.15 pm, hospital source confirmed..
Doctors said Covid encephalopathy that set in due to Covid-19 obstructed his recovery.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee along with Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay and CP Anuj Sharma reached the hospital.
Dadasaheb Phalke Awardee Soumitra Chatterjee had to be put on life support. His condition was stable for several days but deteriorated on late Friday and Saturday after he underwent tracheostomy and plasmapheresis.
Chatterjee had debuted in Satyajit Ray’s masterpiece Apur Sansar and collaborated in 14 films with the maestro.
He had collaborated with most of the leading directors starting with Mrinal Sen, Tarun Mazumdar, Tapan Sinha, Goutam Ghose, Ajoy Kar, Asit Sen, Rituporno Ghosh to Srijit Mukherji, Sujoy Ghosh, Atanu Ghosh, Suman Ghosh, Sandip Ray, Shiboprosad Mukherjee - Nandita Roy, Leena Gangopadhyay - Saibal Banerjee, Rudranil Ghosh from the recent times.
Also conferred with France's prestigious award Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur, Chatterjee's huge list of accolades include Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi and multiple National Awards.
