Soumitra's death an irreparable loss to Indian cinema: Om Birla

New Delhi, Nov 15 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Sunday expressed sorrow over the death of legendary Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee due to COVID-related symptoms in a hospital in Kolkata, and termed his passing away as 'an irreparable loss to the Indian cinema'.

Condoling the demise of veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee, Mr Birla in a message said, 'The sad demise of veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee is an irreparable loss to the Indian cinema.

'Recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke, Padma Bhushan and various other awards, Soumitra Da's contributions to the film industry shall always be remembered. My condolences to his bereaved family members. Om Shanti,' he added.

The legendary actor died of multi-organ failure at 1215 hrs at Belle Vue Clinic in Kolkata on Sunday.

He was 85 and survived by wife Deepa Chatterjee, son Sougata Chatterjee and daughter Poulami Bose.

Chatterjee was admitted to the Belle Vue Clinic on October 6 after he tested positive for Novel Coronavirus but later, tested negative.

However, his condition gradually deteriorated as he developed other complications and after a fight for 40 days, he breathed his last at 1215 hrs, hospital sources confirmed.
