Believer meets mentor

New Delhi/Kolkata, Nov 15 (UNI) Scores of admirers of Soumitra Chatterjee have been praying for his recovery since he tested Covid-19 positive echoing his own dialogue in film 'Kony'-"Fight...Fight,"-but it ended on ...with tears on innumerable eyes eighteen years after 'departure' of his 'creator'-Satyajit Ray.
Soumitra Chatterjee, one of the most favourite actors of maestro Ray, was born on January 19, 1935.
He was more better known for his collaborations with Oscar-winning film director Ray, with whom he worked in 14 films.
He was also the first Indian film personality conferred with the Ordre des Arts et des Letters, France's highest award for artists. He was also the winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award which is India's highest award for cinema.
In 2017, exactly 30 years after auteur Satyajit Ray was honoured with France's highest civilian award, the coveted Legion of Honor, thespian Soumitro Chatterjee, arguable, the most prominent face of Ray's films, also received the prestigious award. He was the seventh recipient of this award.
The first ten years of his early life past in Krishnanagar in Nadia district of Bengal, the town under the influence of playwright Dwijendra Lal Ray had a flourishing theatre culture, with numerous small theatre groups.
His grandfather was the president of one such group while his father was an amateur actor.
Starting with his debut film, 'Apur Sansar' (The World of Apu, 1959) as adult Apu, the third part of 'Apu Trilogy', he went on to work in several notable films with Ray, including Abhijan-1962, Charulata-1964, Aranyer Din Ratri-1969, Ashani Sanket-1973, Sonar Kella-1974 and Joi Baba Felunath-1978 as Detective Feluda, Hirak Rajar Deshe-1980, Ghare Baire-1984, Ganashatru-1989 and Shakha Proshakha in 1990.
Meanwhile, he also worked with other noted directors of Bengali cinema, with Mrinal Sen in 'Akash Kusum'-1965, Tapan Sinha in 'Kshudhita Pashan'-1960'' 'Jhinder Bandi'-1961','Atonko'-1984, Asit Sen in 'Swaralipi'-1961, Ajoy Kar in 'Otol Joler Aaobhan'-1962, 'Saat Pake Bandha'-1963, 'Parineeta'-1969, Tarun Mazumdar in 'Sansar Simante'-1975, 'Ganadevata'-1978, 'Poth o Prasad', 'Agomon'-1988 and Saroj Dey in 'Kony'-1984.
