Ethiopia Tigray conflict worsens as airports come under attack

Addia Ababa, Nov 14( UNI) The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region on Saturday fired rockets at airports in a neighbouring state, further escalating the conflict with the government.
The TPLF, which controls Tigray, claimed that it had targeted at least two sites in Amhara state and warned that it will carry out further attacks, a BBC report said.
According to reports one of the rocket hit the airport in Gondar damaging it partially damaged, while a second rocket which was fired simultaneously landed just outside of the airport in Bahir Dar.
Both airports are used by military and civilian aircraft. There was no information about the casualties.
Forces from Amhara have been fighting alongside their federal counterparts against Tigray fighters.
Tension between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF has now escalated into a full blown military clash since the past month, which has seen hundreds of casualties, and now reports have emerged of massacre of civilians in the town of Mai-Kadra (May Cadera) on 9 November.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and forces loyal to Tigray's leaders have accused each other of carrying out the mass killings.
Earlier this month Mr Abiy ordered a military operation against the TPLF after he accused them of attacking a military camp hosting federal troops. The TPLF has denied these accusation. Since then there has been a number of clashes and air strikes in the region.
The fighting has forced at least 17,000 civilians to cross the border into Sudan, according to the UN.
Later on Saturday, there were reports of loud explosions in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, although it wasn't clear what caused the explosions. However, a TPLF spokesman had earlier warned Eritrea could be targeted.
