CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government has decided to name roads and buildings after eminent personalities from the field of arts and culture, and history to mark their contribution for the society.
The public works department (PWD) has amended its policy on naming of roads and buildings. PWD minister Vijay Inder Singla said prior to this amendment, roads or buildings were named only after religious personalities, civil or military gallantry award recipients, war martyrs, freedom fighters or Olympians or world-level sportspersons.
After the amendment, Kharar-Bassi Pathana Road has been named after renowned Punjabi historian Giani Ditt Singh to honour his contribution to the society, said Singla. He said a special repair of this 12.45-km-long road was underway with the estimated cost of Rs 4.68 crore which would be completed by March 31 next year.
The minister said Giani Ditt Singh was known as a scholar, poet, editor, besides distinguished historian. He was an eminent Singh Sabha reformer who wrote over 70 books on Sikhism, the most famous of them was Khalsa Akhbar.
Singla said the matter came to his knowledge after getting a formal recommendation from Bassi Pathana MLA Gurpreet Singh GP.
