Ludhiana, November 13

To ensure proper management of waste, Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu inaugurated a portable compactor transfer station at Sarabha Nagar on Friday. MC Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal, officials of the MC and Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) were also present on the occasion. The station has been set up by the LIT.

May end nuisance of roadside garbage dumps

There are a number of roadside garbage dumps in the city which have been creating a lot of nuisance for the people for a longtime. Through the portable compactor transfer station, the waste will be directly transferred to main garbage dump with the help of a vehicle.

Mayor Sandhu said, “We are aiming to make the city garbage-free, neat and clean.” He said they are following instructions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and adhering to the Solid Waste Management Rules. The compactors are to be set up at 40 locations in the city. Of these, 22 compactors are to be installed under the Smart City Mission (Phase 1), five compactors under (Phase 2) while 13 compactors are to be installed by the LIT, he said.

There are a number of roadside garbage dumps in the city which have been creating a lot of nuisance for the people for a longtime. Through the portable compactor transfer station, the waste will be directly transferred to main garbage dump with the help of a vehicle.

“The garbage pickers will unload garbage from carts at the portable compactor transfer station where the compaction of waste will be done. With using a vehicle, the loaded compactor unit will be then transported to the main garbage dump where waste will be discharged. Thereafter compactor unit will be transported back to the station at Sarabha Nagar”, said Trust Engineer Boota Ram.

Mayor Sandhu said the LIT was making all out efforts to make functional the remaining portable compactor transfer stations by December 22. “These compactors will be beneficial for the city in upcoming Swachh Survekshan-2021,” he said.
