Chennai, Nov 14 (UNI) Two personnel of the Tamil Nadu
Fire and Rescue services department died and two others
injured when a textile showroom collapsed following a
major fire in Madurai district on Saturday.
Reports received at the police headquarters here said
soon after getting information that a fire broke out at the
textile shop at South Masi street, two fire services team
rushed to the spot to douse the blaze.
While the team was battling to bring the fire under
control, the old two-storeyed building collapsed due
to intense heat, trapping four people under the debris.
They were rescued from the rubble and admitted to
the Government Rajaji Hospital, where two firemen
P.Krishnamurthy and K.Sivarajan died despite best
of treatment.
Two other firemen, R.Kalyankumar and Chinnakaruppu,
who sustained burns and injuries were undergoing
treatment at the hospital.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Opposition
DMK President M K Stalin, Dr S Ramadoss of PMK
and leaders of various parties condoled the death
of the two firemen in the blaze.
In a statement here, Mr Palaniswami announced a
solatium of Rs 25 lakh each to the families of
Sivarajan and Krishnamurthy, who died after the
first floor collapsed due to extreme heat due to
the fire, and a government job to one of their
family members in recognition of the supreme
sacrifices made by them.
While Rs ten lakh would be paid from the Chief
Minister's Public Relief Fund, Rs 15 lakh would
be paid from the government funds.
He also expressed grief and anguish over their
deaths and offered his heartfelt condolences to
the bereaved family members.
He also announced Rs three lakh each as assistance
from the government funds to the two other firemen,
Kalyankumar and Chinnakaruppu, who sustained burns
and injuries in the accident and said the government
would bear their full medical expenses.
