COIMBATORE: In a warning to people who think they can abandon their aged parents after getting their properties, revenue officials in Coimbatore say they have implemented the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 in seven cases so far.
They have cancelled property registration deeds worth Rs 2.7 crore and even ordered monthly compensation in two cases. The most recent case was cancellation of a gift deed registration of a property worth Rs 31 lakh on Wednesday.
Karuppusamy, 71, had transferred his property worth Rs 31 lakh to his son Senthil Kumar, 43, a few years ago. However, Senthil Kumar reportedly did not care for his parents once he got the property registered in his name.
A few months ago, Karuppusamy approached district collector K Rajamani and sought help.
Based on this, revenue divisional officer of Coimbatore North P Suresh called Karuppusamy and Senthilkumar for a meeting, heard both sides and ordered cancellation of the gift deed registration. He handed over the property -- six cent of land and a house -- back to Karuppusamy.
