Puducherry CM urged to exert pressure on Centre to approve Bill for 50% MBBS seats under govt quota in private colleges

PUDUCHERRY: A forum of students and parents has urged chief minister V Narayanasamy to pressurize the Union government to accord approval for a draft Bill passed by the government to earmark 50% of MBBS seats in private medical colleges in the Union territory under the government quota.
Pondicherry State Students and Parents Welfare Association president V Balasubramanian said lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi approved in June-July the draft Bill passed by the government earmarking 50% of MBBS seats in private colleges under government quota. The issue had been pending with the Union home ministry for the past four months, he said and urged the chief minister to exert pressure on the Centre to get its approval at the earliest.
He said the Puducherry government could not manage to get more than 35% of MBBS seats under its quota in the private colleges over the years while the Tamil Nadu government had reserved 65% of the seats in private colleges and 50% of the seats in minority colleges under government quota.
Balasubramanian said the delay in earmarking seats under government quota would jeopardize the future of students and put parents under mental agony.
"Hence, we request you to take up the matter as a top priority and implement it before starting the counselling process by Centac for this academic year 2020-21," he said.
