Two brothers in Kashmir develop TikTok alternative

  • In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of self-reliant India, two brothers from Kashmir's Budgam district have created a mobile application which they say is an alternative to the Chinese video-sharing app TikTok that was banned in India in June this year following the Galwan Valley clash.
  • App Developer Tipu Sultan Wani along with his elder brother Mohd Farooq, who is a software engineer, has developed the top-notch application named 'Nucular'.
  • Wani had earlier developed a mobile application --"File Share Tool" which allows sharing files at a speed of 40 MB per second, as an alternative to banned Chinese app SHAREit.
  • Buoyed by the success of "File Share Tool," the siblings decided to create an app on the lines of TikTok.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced a contribution of USD 1 million to the COVID-19 ASEAN Response Fund at the 17th ASEAN-India Summit, which was held virtually.
  • In his address to leaders from the 10 ASEAN countries, PM Modi also highlighted India's response and broader support to the international community and welcomed the association's initiatives to fight the pandemic.

Trump signs order banning Americans from investing in companies that support Chinese military

  • US President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order that will prohibit American investors from investing in Chinese companies that support China's military, a move that can escalate heightened tensions between the two countries.
  • National Security Advisor Robert C O'Brien in an official statement said that order is to "protect American investors from unintentionally providing capital" to enhance the intelligence services of the Chinese government and People's Liberation Army (PLA).
  • The order goes into effect from January 11.

Low, middle income countries' access to Covid-19 vaccine crucial for economic recovery: WHO

  • "As global public goods, COVID vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics must be available on the basis of equitable and affordable access for all, especially for health workers, the elderly and other at risk groups," Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a panel on COVID-19 vaccines at the Paris Peace Forum.
  • "In our interconnected world if people in low- and middle-income countries miss out on vaccines, the virus will continue spreading and the economic recovery globally will be delayed. Equitable access is in the national interest of each and every country. Vaccine nationalism will prolong the pandemic, not shorten it; making vaccine work requires a broad collaboration, not just across sectors, but across partners. No country can address these challenges alone," Tedros added.

Jharkhand allows bursting of firecrackers for 2 hours on Diwali

  • People of Jharkhand can burst firecrackers for two hours between 8 pm and 10 pm on the day of Diwali, the state's pollution control body said in an order on Thursday.
  • In the urban areas of several districts including Ranchi where the pollution level is moderate, only green crackers will be allowed, as per the November 9 ruling of the National Green Tribunal.
