NEW DELHI: The air quality in the capital is expected to deteriorate over the next two days as unfavourable winds bring in more fumes from farm fires that will add to pollution from Diwali crackers, but likely rainfall after the festival should improve the situation.

Air quality is predicted to remain at the higher end of “very poor” levels if there are no additional emissions due to fireworks during Diwali, the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) said in its forecast for New Delhi. Stubble burning induced impact is expected to increase from negligible to moderate for the next two days, it said.

SAFAR is the government’s nodal agency that tracks and forecasts air pollution.

After almost a week of hazardous pollution levels, the air quality in the capital region improved over the past two days. PM 2.5 levels are at their lowest in the lead-up to the Diwali period over the past four years.
