So far, India has recorded 86,83,916 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 1,28,121 deaths. A total of 80,66,501 people have recuperated from COVID-19 so far. There are 4,89,294 active cases in the country as of date, which comprises 5.63 percent of the total caseload, the data stated. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have reported the highest number of cases. However, infections are rising rapidly in states like Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Yet, India’s recovery rate continues to rise and now stands at 92.89 percent. 'Unlock 6.0' is underway. Seventy-eight per cent of the new 47,905 coronavirus infections reported in a span of 24 hours on Thursday are from10 states and union territories with Delhi continuing to register the highest single-day cases at 8,593 followed by Kerala and Maharashtra, according to the Union health ministry.
For the successive fifth day, new COVID-19 cases reported in a span of 24 hours did not cross the 50,000 mark, while the trend of daily new recoveries outnumbering daily new infections continued for the 40th day. As many as 52,718 new recoveries were registered in a day as against 47,905 infections during the same period.
Ten states and union territories reported 78 per cent of the new cases registered in a span of 24 hours.

Data indicating that a vaccine being developed against Covid-19 is highly effective is the "best science news of the year", a pharmaceutical industry association chief said, voicing hope that other vaccine candidates would show equally good results.
"A vaccine that has 90 percent efficacy and is pretty safe, that is a historic breakthrough," the head of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA), Thomas Cueni, said.
American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech announced Monday that their vaccine had proven 90 percent effective in preventing Covid-19 infections in ongoing Phase 3 trials involving more than 40,000 people.
"This was the best science news of the year," IFPMA's director general told AFP in an interview.

Drug firm Zydus Cadila on Thursday said it has successfully completed a phase 2 clinical trial in COVID-19 patients with its biological therapy, 'PegiHep’, and it will now begin phase 3 clinical trial.
In a regulatory filing, Zydus Cadila said “it has successfully completed a phase 2 clinical trial in COVID-19 patients with its biological therapy, Pegylated Interferon alpha-2b, ‘PegiHep’... Based upon the results from its Phase 2 study, Zydus Cadila now plans to conduct a phase 3 clinical trial in India”.

Germany is seeing tentative signs that a surge in coronavirus infections may be easing, the head of the country's disease control agency RKI said.
"The curve is flattening," said Lothar Wieler, adding that it "shows that we are not helpless against this virus" and that restrictions such as social distancing and mask wearing can help halt the march of Covid-19.
