Forest fires continue in HP, even post monsoon

Shimla, Nov 12 (UNI) Even the post-monsoon showers failed to extinguish the flames raging in the forests of this hill state, which recorded a disproportionate increase in the past two months, the state Wildlife, Forest and Fire departments confirmed.
According to the HP Forest department, more than 500 cases of blaze have been registered in the state in the past two months, gutting the forest wealth and causing massive damage to the state wildlife and nature.
Forest fires in Himachal are common in the pre-monsoon season and during the period between March to July this year, the state suffered an estimated loss of Rs 40 lakh from around 450 forest fires, which affected more than 2,500 hectares of land, a Forest official said.
He attributed the increasing incidences of blaze in the lean fire post-monsoon spell for drought-like situation and prolonged dry conditions prevailing in Himachal Pradesh, which have continued for the past two months.
Nearly 500 forest fires have been reported in Himachal since August, as most of the cases occurred in the districts of Kullu and Shimla of the state.
Under the Parvati valley of Kullu district, a forest remained under the blaze near Nakthan village for around two weeks, before it doused down recently, ruining new saplings or undergrowth.
October alone reported 17 forest fires in Kullu district, causing a loss of lakhs of rupees and affecting wildlife, including the habitat of birds and animals.

''The recent mild rainfall witnessed by the Parvati valley a week ago brought respite from the frequent fires.'' a fire Officer said.
''The breaking of blazes in most of the cases is caused due to dry leaves, grass blades and grasslands because of drought and dry conditions, whereas in some cases adjacent to forests, people are setting their fields or grasslands on fire, which after being left unattended, become uncontrolled and spread quickly,'' he added.
With some trees shedding their leaves in the autumn season, the forest floors become full of small fuels such as dead leaves, twigs and the highly inflammable Chir pine needles.
In the season, a large number of fire incidences took place at Rohru and Rampur in Shimla also.
Sometimes, people passing through a forest may light a fire for cooking food or for warmth and leave it burning, which may cause a fire.
Forest fires can also start from natural causes such as lightning, rolling stones and rubbing of dry bamboos with each other.
