HP govt takes U-turn, resumes subsidy on food items to IT payees

Shimla, Nov 12 (UNI) Facing stiff opposition from the Opposition parties in the state for increasing the prices of subsidised food items under the Public Distribution System to the Above Poverty line (APL) families, the Jai Ram Thakur government took a u-turn on Thursday, by resuming the subsidy on these items.
Confirming this in a notification here, a spokesperson of the Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department said the state government has decided to revoke the withdrawn subsidy on flour and rice to income tax payers forthwith.
''Such households who pay income tax, will be provided oil, pulses, salt and sugar at subsidised rate under the State Subsidy Scheme in the PDS outlets,'' he added.
The ration cards of income tax payees, which were blocked earlier, have also been unblocked, paving the way
for them to avail the subsidised flour and rice from Depots again, the spokesman added.
The state government also assured that as soon as the prices of pulses, oil, salt and sugar would be fixed,
the income tax payer families can also get these items from the Depots.
The state government had to face the wrath of opposition parties as they blamed the state government for continuing food subsidy to many senior administrative officer under the PDS system.
The state government is bearing additional subsidy on pulses, refined and mustard oil, in addition to supply of PDS food items, Sugar, Flour and rices to such beneficiaries by the Centre-funded scheme.
