Highlighting the issue of air pollution caused by dyeing units in various colonies falling under the Ludhiana East constituency, MLA Sanjay Talwar has written a complaint to NGT Monitoring Committee Chairman Justice Jasbir Singh; DC Varinder Kumar Sharma and MC Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal seeking solution of the problem.
Inmates of the Central Jail have also been suffering a lot for a long time. There is a need to find out a permanent solution to the problem.
The MLA said dyeing units at Tajpur Road, Main Tibba Road, Mahavir Jain Colony, Kakka Dhaula Road, Jaiswal Complex, Geeta Colony, New Shakti Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Kakowal Road, Rahon Road, Guru Vihar Road, Bahadur Ke Road, Noorwala Road, Baba Deep Singh Nagar, Gajja Jain Colony, Beantpura, Hargobind Pura and Focal Point area are causing pollution. He said ash emanating from the chimneys of these factories was falling on the houses of these colonies. He blamed these units for causing pollution due to which many people have fallen ill in the past years.
“The people in these areas can’t sit in open. They can’t even dry their wet clothes in open,” he said.
“Due to the pollution caused by these factories, inmates of the Central Jail have also been suffering a lot for a long time. I have conducted meetings with the dyeing unit associations and officials of the PPCB but to no avail. There is a need to find out a permanent solution to the problem”, he said.
He requested the chairman of the NGT monitoring committee to conduct surprise checking in the affected areas and take action against the owners of alleged erring dyeing units. He also demanded action against the officials of Punjab Pollution Control Board for allegedly failing in their duty to control the pollution levels.
