Patna: Left parties have proved to be dependable allies for the Rashtriya Janata Dal. CPIML, CPM and CPI together have won or were leading in 17 of the 29 seats they contested, whereas RJD’s main partner Congress could manage only 19 seats despite contesting 70 seats.
The ground work of Left parties, combined with the RJD support have worked for the alliance. Among the Left parties, CPIML (L) emerged as the best performer with leads/wins in 11 constituencies out of 19 it contested. During the campaign, the BJP had tried to mislead the electorate by projecting CPIML(L) with the proscribed Maoists but the voter had no doubts in reposing faith in the party which swears allegiance to the Indian Constitution.
“We have a good lead in Dumraon, Karakat, Tarari, Agioan, Ara, Ghsosi, Arwal and Pali. Our performance is good in remaining seat too,” CPIML office secretary Kunal told ET. CPIML sources credited the performance to the hard work of the cadre, particularly in Shahabad and Magadh regions. “We consistently work to strengthen the party. We will be the voice of poor people in the state assembly,” a CPI ML source said.
This is for the first time CPIML contested in an alliance with RJD. In 2015, CPIML could win only Tarari, Darauli and Darauli (Siwan). CPI is happy with its performance with a 50% strike rate in the six seats it contested. CPM has also re-emerged by leading in three, including Bibhutipur (Samastipur) and Manjhi (Saran). The party was allotted four seats in the alliance.
CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury warned naysayers against writing them off, saying had they been given more seats, they would have notched up higher numbers in the elections.
