Volcanic activities in Indonesia send people fleeing

Jakarta, Nov 11 (UNI) About 1,294 people have fled from the vicinity of the Merapi Volcano in Indonesia’s Central province of Java, informed the country's disaster agency on Wednesday.
As the volcanic activities rising and increasing possibility of an eruption, several villagers within Merapi’s disaster-prone area moved to safer places, the head of the province’s Regional Disaster Safrudin said.
"In the Central Java province, there are 1,091 evacuees from Magelang, Boyolali, and Klaten regencies," he said.
The number of displaced people rose to 203 in the Yogyakarta province of the southern Java.
The agency head added that the shelters had been arranged to comply with COVID-19 health protocols for preventing virus transmission among the evacuees, particularly the vulnerable sections among them.
Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center observed debris coming out of the volcano four times on Wednesday.
Authorities had already issued a Level 3 warning for monitoring the volcano’s status since last Thursday.
Mount Merapi is one of 127 active volcanoes of the country.
The last major eruption took place in 2010, it killed more than 300 people and displaced thousands.
