Assam is going to assembly polls next year. AIUDF has proposed Mahagatbandhan (grand alliance) of opposition parties to take on the ruling BJP led coalition in Assam. In 2016 assembly polls Congres had rejected the Grand alliance offer.

Ajmal said, “We will keep on making overtures for alliance till Congress high command says no. However after its dismal performance in Bihar, congress will think thousand times before saying no to grand alliance.”

When asked if the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen putting up candidates marred the prospects of grand alliance coming to power in Bihar, he said, “ We could have also gone to Bihar for I being a cleric have substantial following there however as this will result in split in votes, I refrained from going to Bihar.”

Attacking Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, he said that Sarma is working overtime to ensure BJP is defeated in Assam polls next year. “ We are clear that if a grand alliance comes to power, the chief minister and deputy chief minister will not be from AIUDF.”
