SILCHAR: The body of a 35-year-old woman, who was allegedly killed by her husband, was exhumed by police and district administration officials from an area at Didarkhush in Sonai block of Cachar district on Tuesday.
A senior police official said the victim, Ranjana Begum, was allegedly killed by her husband Jamal Uddin on Friday night after the latter returned home in an inebriated state. They got into a heated argument after which Jamal strangled Ranjana, then burnt her and later buried her near an under-construction building, about 2.5km from the house, the official said.
On Saturday, Jamal told people in the village that his wife was missing. As the news spread and the village defence party members came to know about the incident, they grew suspicious, sources said, adding that they beat up Jamal after which he confessed to his crime. The members handed him over to police.
On Tuesday afternoon, a team of police personnel of Sonai police station, including officer in-charge Jakaria Choudhury, sub inspector Khirod Baishya, along with district administration officials, including circle officer Bikash Chetri and few others, reached Didarkhush, about 28km from Silchar and exhumed the body. It was sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem. The body was in a partially decomposed state when it was exhumed, police said.
The incident sparked tension at Didarkhush and the nearby areas, the sources added.
An official said police were grilling Jamal to find out more details about the incident. “All possible angles related to the murder are being thoroughly investigated,” the official said.
