Ludhiana, November 9

Days after the special task force (STF) wing busted a major drug trafficking racket and arrested four alleged smugglers, the AAP Punjab (Youth Wing) president Meet Hayer here today demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.

Hayer alleged that one of the arrested accused in the racket, Gurdeep Singh Rano, of Payal was a close aide of some senior Akali and Congress leaders.

Hayer, addressing a press conference, also showed some photos of Gurdeep Singh Rano with senior leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress.

Meet Hayer said the notorious drug smugglers were earlier operating under the patronage of the then leaders of the Akali government, adding that after the change of guard in Punjab, nothing had changed as the Congress leaders were sheltering them now.

Demanding a time-bound High Court-monitored CBI probe into the matter, Hayer said it was urgently needed so that those involved in the well-organised drug trade could be brought to justice. A large quantity of drugs, cash and expensive luxury cars, seized from Rano, were enough to prove that drug trafficking in Punjab was being run with impunity under the political patronage of the government.

Speaking on Capt Amarinder Singh’s promise to eradicate drug menace from Punjab within four weeks before the Assembly elections of 2017, Hayer alleged that he had made false promises to the people of Punjab and after forming the government, he did nothing but save the Badals. He said apart from drugs, transport, sand and other mafias were still active in Punjab under the Congress and SAD leaders. — TNS
