Bypolls in Jharkhand: Generation Next holds on to their family turfs in Dumka and Bermo

Ranchi, Nov 10 (UNI) At the end it was Mahagathbandhan comprising the ruling JMM
and the Congress which went on to retain their respective seats of Dumka (ST) and
Bermo results for which were declared on Tuesday.
In Dumka Basant Soren of the JMM despite trailing in the 11 rounds pulled back things
and eventually ended up being the winner by defeating his nearest rival Dr Lois Marandi
of the BJP by a margin of 6,842 votes.
Basant Soren who is the younger brother of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and youngest
son of JMM supremo and Rajya Sabha MP Shibu Soren got a total of 80,559 votes while
Dr Lois could managed only 73,717 votes. The victory for Basant means a person from the
Soren family continues to represent the prestigious seat of Dumka in Jharkhand Assembly.
Incidentally this was the first taste of Vidhan Sabha elections for Basant who had once lost
the Rajya Sabha elections.
On the other hand post the demise of Congress heavy weight leader Rajendra Singh his
elder son Jaimangal Singh alias Anup Singh was fielded from Bermo seat by the Congress
party.
Jaimangal riding on the sympathy wave post the demise of his father rose to a comfortable
victory by defeating his nearest rival Yogeshwar Mahto Batul of the BJP. Jaimangal got a total
of 92,751 votes while Batul could only manage 78,528 votes.
Interestingly for Basant he would be now sitting in the same assembly where his brother is
the Chief Minister and sister in-law Sita Soren is an MLA.
Moreover all the members of the Soren family including Hemant Soren, Sita Soren and
Basant Soren are representing Barhet, Jama and Dumka seats of Santhal Pargana division
in the house which are reserved for the STs.
