Armenia, Azerbaijan sign ceasefire agreement, Russia to maintain peacekeeping force

New Delhi, Nov 10 (UNI) Warring Armenia and Azerbaijan have signed a ceasefire and Russia will maintain a peacekeeping force on the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh and along the corridor connecting it to Armenia.
Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a statement
on complete ceasefire and termination of hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone effective from midnight Tuesday.
Azerbaijan and Armenia will remain in their current positions.
A peacekeeping force of the Russian Federation will be deployed on the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh and along the corridor connecting it to the Republic of Armenia, a spokesman of the Russian embassy here said.
Internally displaced persons and refugees will return to Nagorno-Karabakh and the adjacent regions under the supervision of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The parties will exchange prisoners of war, detainees and dead bodies.
The blockade of economic and transport ties in the region will be lifted and the oversight of transport communications will be ensured with the involvement of the agencies of the Border Guard Service of Russia.
''We proceed from the assumption that the agreements reached will create necessary conditions for a lasting and full-scale settlement of the crisis over Nagorno-Karabakh on a fair basis and in the interests of the people of Armenia and Azerbaijan,'' the spokesman added.
Hundreds of lives have been lost in the war between Christian dominated Armenia and predominantly Islamic Azerbaijan since September 27 for control of energy rich Nagorno Karabakh.
There have been claims and counter-claims over the control of each other's territory. But the war in recent weeks intensified resulting in hundreds of people fleeing war zones.
The two warring countries have since then agreed for ceasefire three times but neither country held on to it.
