BJP's count rises to 17

According to the election Commission's 12.27 am update, the BJP has won 17 of the 28 seats in Madhya Pradesh bypolls. The saffron party has continued to storm ahead in two seats (Mehgaon and Sanwer) while the Congress is leading in Gwalior East. Notably, BJP's woman minister, Imarti Devi lostthe  bypoll from
the Dabra assembly seat. Congress candidate Suresh Raje defeated Imarti Devi, considered a loyalist of BJP Rajya Sabha member Jyotiraditya Scindia, by a margin of 7,633 votes

BJP gets majority in Madhya Pradesh Assembly

 
 BJP has so far won 12 seats on Tuesday out of the 28 assembly constituencies where bypolls were held in Madhya Pradesh, giving it enough numbers to
achieve majority in the House and provide stability to its goverhment in the state, where it came to power in March. On the other hand, the Congress, which lost power eight months ago following a revolt by a sections of its MLAs, has bagged three seats so far. The BJP is leading in seven seats, while the Congress
in ahead in five.

BJP bags one more seats

In addition to the Wangoi seat and Wangjing Tentha constiteuncy in Manipur, the BJP has also registered a victory in the Saitu seat. BJP's Ngamthang Haokip defeated Congress nominee Lamtinthang Haokip by 12,257  votes. In Singhat assembly constituency, BJP candidate Ginsuanhau was declared elected unopposed and he has already been sworn in as MLA recently.

Congress registers victory in lone Chhattisgarh seat

 
The ruling Congress won the  Marwahi Assembly bypoll in Chhattisgarh. Congress candidate Dr KK Dhruw won the bypoll to the constituency, located in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi (GPM) district, by 38,197 votes. He defeated the BJP's Dr Gambheer Singh. Dhruw polled 83,561 votes while Singh secured 45,364 votes
 
Bypoll was necessitated for this seat, reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), by the death of its MLA and Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) founder Ajit Jogi on May 29 Voting had been held on November 3 and the turnout was 77.89 percent. With this victory, the tally of the Congress in the 90-member assembly has gone up to 70.

NDPP bags Southern Angami-I, Independent wins Pungro-Kiphire

 
Ruling NDPP nominee Medo Yhokha bagged the Southern Angami-I seat, while Independent candidate T Yangseo Sangtam won the by-elections to the Pungro-Kiphire Assembly segment in Nagaland on Tuesday. In the Southern Angami-I segment, Yhokha polled 4,773 votes, defeating his nearest rival — Independent candidate Seyievilie Peter Zashumo — by 598 votes, announced Returning Officer Mohammed Ali Shihab. The by-election in the seat was held on November3  as it fell vacant due to the death of MLA Vikho-o Yhoshu, who was also the Speaker of the Assembly.
 
In Pungro-Kiphire, the ruling People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) suffered a debacle as its BJP nominee Lirimong Sangtam stood in the third position. T Yangseo Sangtam, who fought the election as an Independent, won the seat by a margin of 1,527 votes

BJP wins Dubbak seat by narrow margin

 In Telangana's Dubbak Assembly constituency, BJP'S M Raghunandan Rao defeated TRS' Solipeta Sujata by a slender margin of 1,079 votes after a neck-and-neck fight during the day. Congress' Cheruku Srinivas Reddy trailed behind Sujatha with 22,196 votes. The bypoll, held on 3 November,was necessitated due to the death of sitting TRS MLA Solipeta Ramalinga Reddy in August this year due to health issues and the TRS fielded his widow Sujatha as its candidate.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan hails BJP's victory

In a press conference at the BJP headquarters in the state, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the party had received people’s blessings in Bihar, MP, Gujarat and by-polls in other states and thanked party workers.  "This election was abnormal for us it was challenging to work smoothly with some our colleagues who had at one point fought against us," said the chief minister. However, he said that the success was due to the efforts of the workers and the unity shown by the party. The party has so far won 11 seats in the state. State health minister Dr Prabhuram Choudhary won the  Assembly bypoll from Sanchi while senior tribal leader Bisahulal Singh won from Anuppur. Both had switched sides from the Congress in March this year. 

Chouhan also hit at the Congress for making allegations against it. " It is now evident that people dont like such type of indecency." The people of Madhya Pradesh voted for "seva", the chief minister said.

Saffron party wins all but one seat in UP

The BJP has won six seats that went to bypolls in Uttar Pradesh on 3 November — Naugawan Sadat, Bulandshahr, Tundla , Bangermau, Ghatampur  and Deoria — while the SP wrested the Malhani seat. BJP's Usha Sirohi trounced nearest rival Mohammad Yunus (BSP) by 21,702 votes in Bulandshahr while in Tundla, Prempal Singh Dhangar defeated SP's Mahraj Singh Dhangar by margin of 17,683 votes. Samajwadi Party's Lucky Yadav won the Malhani seat defeating Dhananjaya Singh (Independent) by 4,632 votes.

BJP retains Bangermau seat

The ruling BJP retained the Unnao's Bangermau Assembly seat after its candidate Shrikant Katiyar defeated Congress' Arti Bajpai by 31,398 votes. Bangermau is among the seven assembly constituencies in the state for which bypolls were held on 3 November. The seat fell vacant following the conviction of sitting MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in a rape case.

In addition to Abdasa, Morbi and Karjan, where Congress turncoats registered a win, the ruling BJP has also wrested Limbdi, Dhari, Dangs, Gadhada and Kaprada seats. In Dangs, BJP's Vijaybhai Patel defeated Congress' Suryakant Gavit by a whopping 60,095 votes.

The ruling BJP in Karnataka won the byelections to two Assembly constituencies, wresting the seats from the Opposition Congress and JDS. It created history, recording its first-ever victory in the Sira assembly segment in Tumakuru district with party candidate Dr C M Rajesh Gowda romping home with a margin of over 12,000 votes.

BJP's Pradhyumansinh Jadeja defeated his nearest Congress rival Shantilal Senghani by a margin of 36,778 votes from Abdasa Assembly seat in Kutch district of Gujarat. The saffron party has bagged two other seats - Morbi and Karjan - and is leading in the remaining five seats.

BJP's N Munirathna wins RR Nagar Assembly byelection in Karnataka by over 58,000 votes. Munirathna, who joined the saffron party last year,  polled 60.14 percent of the total votes while his nearest rival, Congress's Kusuma H got 32.4 percent of the votes polled.  This is the third consecutive victory for Munirathna since 2013 and his first as the BJP candidate.

Congress candidate Indu Raj Narwal defeated his nearest rival and BJP nominee Yogeshwar Dutt in the Baroda assembly seat of Haryana with a margin of over 10,000 votes.  This is the second time that Olympian wrestler Dutt has lost the polls from this constituency.

Y Antas Khan emerged victorious in the Lilong Assembly seat in Manipur. BJP has won in two seats and is leading in two others. Meanwhile, JD(U)'s Sunil Kumar maintained a strong lead over Congress' Pravesh Kumar Mishra with a margin of 19,149 votes.

BJP's Oinam Lukhoi Singh emerged victorious in the Wangoi constituency with a narrow margin of 257 votes. Meanwhile, in Nagaland, Independent candidates are leading the race in boththe seats that went to bypolls.

Madhya Pradesh Minister Narottam Mishra said the BJP will get a majority, even as the party led in 19 seats in the state. The saffron party is also ahead of its rivals in all eight seats in Gujarat and both the constituencies in Karnataka that went to bypolls.

The BJP emerged victorious in the Singhat constituency, with its candidate Ginsuanhau winning from the seat. The party took a lead in 17 Madhya Pradesh constituencies, with Congress leading in eight seats.

BJP took a comfortable lead in 16 seats in Madhya Pradesh, while Congress is leading eight constituencies, and Bahujan Samaj Party in one. Independent candidate T Yangseo Sangtam is leading in Nagaland's Pungro Kiphire and Seyievilie Peter Zashumo led in Southern Angami-I.

Jyotiraditya Scindia will be expected to ensure the MLAs loyal to him are re-elected, especially in the 16 seats in the Gwalior and Chambal regions, which are considered strongholds of the Scindia family.

Held under the shadow of the second phase of Bihar elections, the by-elections to 56 other Assembly seats in 11 states saw a good voter turnout despite the pandemic, with reports of violence at two places in Madhya Pradesh and allegations of “fake voting” emanating from Uttar Pradesh.

As per the Indian Express, these elections are politically significant for both the ruling BJP as well as the Opposition parties, as it is seen by many as a litmus test for public approval of the record of the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in its second term.

The counting of these 56 Assembly seats across 11 states, one Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar will be held today, 10 November (Tuesday).

The by-elections of 54 seats were held on 3 November and voting for two seats in Manipur and one Lok Sabha seat in Bihar was held on 7 November.

Madhya Pradesh -28 seats

With 28 seats in the fray, the biggest chunk of Assembly seats that went to polls was in Madhya Pradesh, which saw a voter turnout of 66.37 percent, according to the Election Commission (EC).

Out of the 28 seats that went to polls, 25 fell vacant after Jyotiraditya Scindia’s rebellion against the Congress and subsequent resignation of 22 MLAs led to the collapse of the Kamal Nath government in March.

Uttar Pradesh - 7 seats

In Uttar Pradesh, polling was held for seven seats with 88 candidates in the fray, and saw a voter turnout of 51.57 percent, as per the EC data.

The UP bypolls come at a time when the Yogi Adityanath-led state government has been facing Opposition flak over the law and order situation in the state, particularly after the Hathras and the Balrampur rape-and-murder cases.

Gujarat - 8 seats

In Gujarat, a total of 81 candidates were in the fray for eight seats which collectively had 18.75 lakh registered voters. The state saw nearly 58 percent of the electorate exercising their franchise.

The byelections were necessitated after the sitting Congress MLAs resigned ahead of Rajya Sabha polls in June. Five of them joined the ruling BJP and the party fielded them from the same seats.

Karnataka - 2 seats

Polling for the Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Sira Assembly by-elections was held on 3 November, with a turnout of 82.31 percent and 45.24 percent respectively.

The Sira byelection was necessitated following the death of JD(S) legislator B Sathyanarayana in August, while the RR Nagar seat here fell vacant after the disqualification of the then Congress MLA N Munirathna under the anti-defection law last year.

Odisha - 2 seats

The Tirtol and Balasore Sadar seat went to bypolls this year. The by-election in Balasore was necessitated by the death of the BJP MLA Madan Mohan Dutta in June, while the Tirtol by-election was brought on by the death of the BJD’s Bishnu Charan Das, a veteran Dalit leader, in July.

The bypolls saw a voter turnout of 68.08 percent as per the EC data.

Jharkhand - 2 seats

A total of 28 candidates were in the fray for the race for the two seats in Jharkhand, Dumka, and Bermo, which saw straight fights between the ruling JMM-Congress and opposition BJP.

The state saw a voter turnout of 62.51 percent for the two seats.

Nagaland - 2 seats

The by-elections were held for the Southern Angami-I seat in Kohima district and the Pungro-Kiphire seat in Kiphire district. The by-elections were necessitated by the deaths of then Assembly Speaker Vikho-o Yhoshu and T Torechu of the Naga People’s Front respectively.

Nagaland saw a voter turnout of 83.69 percent in these two seats.

Manipur - 2 seats

Two Assembly constituencies, Lilong and Wangjing Tentha, went to polls along with the third phase in Bihar.

The Election Commission had initially declared five Assembly constituencies in the state as “clear vacant”, but announced the election schedule for only two, leaving out Wangoi, Saitu and Singhat.

Telangana- 1 seat

About 82 percent polling was registered in the by-election to the Dubbak Assembly constituency in Telangana which passed off peacefully, though the campaign witnessed a war of words between the ruling TRS and the BJP.

The bypoll has been necessitated by the death of sitting TRS MLA Solipeta Ramalinga Reddy due to health problems in August this year.

Haryana - 1 seat

The polling in the bypoll to Baroda Assembly seat in Haryana recording an average turnout of 68 percent, which sealed the fate of 14 candidates.

There were 14 candidates, including Olympian wrestler and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee Yogeshwar Dutt, in the fray for the Baroda Assembly seat, which has around 1.81 lakh registered voters.

The seat had fallen vacant in April following the death of Congress MLA Krishan Hooda, who had won it consecutively thrice in 2009, 2014, and 2019 Assembly polls.

Bihar - 1 Lok Sabha seat

Bypoll to the Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha constituency of Bihar was also held on 7 November along with the third phase of Assembly elections in the state. The bypoll in the Valmiki Nagar seat was necessitated after the death of sitting JD(U) MP Baidyanath Prasad Mahto in February.

The Valmiki Nagar constituency, which is located in the West Champaran district of Bihar and consists of six assembly seats — Valmiki Nagar, Ramnagar, Narkatiaganj, Bagaha, Lauriya, and Sikta — saw 58.66 percent voter turnout on the poll day.
