Mammal organisms with hoofs like horses, rhinos in the world originated on Indian soil. This was revealed in a joint team of scientists from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, Hopkins University in the US, and Royal Belgium Institute of Sciences in Belgium.

According to scientists, the study of fossils has revealed the origin of organisms like horses, rhinoceros, and tapir in other areas of the country besides Gujarat about five and a half million years ago.

According to Dr. Kishore Kumar, a former geologist at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, the study was done after collecting more than 350 fossils in lignite mines in Tarakeswar and surrounding areas in Surat district of Gujarat.

The study included the teeth, skulls, bones of the organisms found at that time. Research has revealed that cracking mammals lived in these areas five and a half million years ago, and those creatures were able to run at a moderate pace.

... so were cat-shaped ancestors of horses, rhinos

According to Dr. Kishore Kumar, the study of fossils has revealed that the rhinoceros and horses which are seen in the shape of a huge number of their ancestors were of cat shape. Which changed in size over time. At present, hooves of horses and donkeys are found, in the same way, hoofs of cambatherium were also found.

The naming of the Cambridium after the name of Cambay Bay

According to Dr. Kishore Kumar, fossils of these ancestors of horses, rhinos have been found around Cambay Bay. In such a situation, these things are named Cambay Therium. Where there have been fossils of Cambotherium, there was once a large lake of fresh water, due to which the fossils of these things were preserved for millions of years.

A study of fossils found in lignite mines located in Tarakeswar and surrounding areas of the Surat district of Gujarat has revealed the life of Cambrian therian species that were ancestors of the present horses and rhinos. Studies show that the hoofed mammals first originated in India. The study has also taken the help of scientists from Hopkins University in the US and the Royal Belgium Institute of Sciences. The research report has been published in the Journal of Vertebrate Palaeontology.
