Opposition Congress to move ‘no confidence’ motion against BJP-backed MDA government

Shillong, Nov 9 (UNI) The Opposition Congress will move a no-confidence against the
Conrad K Sangma-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government during the
current autumn session of the legislative assembly, which is scheduled to conclude on
November 12.
Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said the no-confidence motion will be taken up
on Tuesday provided Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh admits a notice on no-confidence motion
given by the opposition.
"It will depend on the wisdom of the Speaker, whether the motion can be taken up
immediately or subsequently we will be guided by the rules," the former Chief Minister
said after chairing an emergent Congress Legislature Party meeting.
He said the opposition will table a motion expressing its want of confidence in the
Council of Ministers led by the incumbent Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in view
of the failure of the government in all fronts particularly the failure to protect the interest
of the state.
“When there is an issue of protecting the interest of the state and government is seen
to be completely insensitive and trying to shy away from its responsibility, there cannot
be any situation which can be a dangerous precedence for the state as a whole," the
veteran Congress legislator said.
"The House is the best platform where issues can be appropriately flagged before
the government, draw the attention of the members of the august house and see how
the House collectively looks at the interest of the state as the priority and how the
interest of the state supersedes everything,” he further said.
“In view of this, we will be submitting a motion under relevant rules and procedures and
conduct of business, expressing our want of confidence in the council of ministers led by
Conrad K Sangma,” the Leader of Opposition iterated.
Asked if the move was to topple the NPP-led government, Sangma said “If the members
of the august house have a realization of the fact that the interest of the state is under
threat...we don’t assume or presume what will happen in the house. We don’t predict
because what happens in the house cannot be taken for granted in advance.”
The seven-party MDA coalition government comprises the National People's Party (21),
the United Democratic Party (7), the People's Democratic Front (4), the BJP and the Hill
State People's Democratic Party (2 each) and the Nationalist Congress Party and Khun
Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (1each) besides three Independents.
Speaker Lyndoh had won the election on UDP ticket, while Deputy Speaker Timothy
D. Shira was elected as member of the assembly on NPP ticket.
The opposition Congress has 19 members in the 60 member-House assembly.
