A vintage car rally was conducted in Chennai on Sunday to draw attention to the plight of refugees in India. As many as 17 vintage models belonging to owners, not only from Tamil Nadu but also from states as far as Goa participated in the rally, organized by the Historical Cars Association of India.
The rally was flagged off at around 10:30am by diplomats from the German and Thai consulate along with representatives from UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) India. The rally, which began at OMR (Rajiv Gandhi Salai), ended at MRC Nagar.
V S Kylas, secretary of the historical cars association of India, said stalls were set up at the flagging-off area displaying products manufactured by refugees. The first car to be flagged off was a 1973 Jaguar E type, V 12 Roadster. Another promonient car that took part in the rally was 1959 Mercedes, 1961 SL Fiat Spyder, 1200cc, designed by Pinninfarina for the American market.
The event was organised by Ascott group in association with UNHCR and Heritage Cars Association of India. The rally was from Citadines OMR to Somerset Greenways Chennai covering a distance of 16kms.
