The Lions have confirmed that fullback Gianni Lombard will face around nine months out with a knee injury.
It is a devastating blow for the 22-year-old, who had made waves so far in 2020 with a string of impressive performances.
The news was confirmed by the Lions via their social media channels on Monday.
Lombard has suffered a ruptured ACL to his right knee and he will require surgery after consulting a specialist.
The Lions are currently in fifth place on the Super Rugby Unlocked log after going down 30-25 to the table-topping Bulls on Saturday.
