NEW DELHI: President-elect Joe Biden is widely expected to make the US yet again an active multilateral player, which would help address India’s concerns about the shared interest of the world getting overshadowed by increasing self-interests of the big powers.

The Biden administration is expected to bring focus back on climate change, global health, nuclear diplomacy with Iran and global trade, people tracking him closely told ET.

With President Donald Trump retreating from multilateral institutions including the WHO and thereby weakening multilateralism, India had felt that multilateralism was in danger due to the self-interests of the big powers. On climate change, the Biden victory would shift the US from a backbencher to the leader.

One of Biden’s first moves after his inauguration could be to re-join the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, as a component of his proposed $2 trillion climate plan.
