"For quite a long time in the cultural and religious history of our country, we strongly believe that buying a few things on Dhanteras can open the gates to luck and prosperity and the occasion also marks the beginning of the festival of lights. If you ask me, buying gold and silver on Dhanteras is considered the most auspicious, for example on this day a gold coin with the image of Goddess Lakshmi imprinted on it is what you can buy. Rohan Sharma, Managing Director of RK Jewellers South Extension-2 is of the opinion that shopping for some meenakari jewellery on this auspicious day could be the best way to respect tradition. ‘When it comes to festivities especially Diwali, Indians love to celebrate it to the fullest and colorful meenakari jewellery is the best way to taste the grandeur of traditional richness," says Rohan.

Gold and diamond jewellery
Well, there can't be a better day to align your ‘precious’ purchase day with the auspicious festival of Dhanteras. With Dhanteras approaching soon, now is the best time to invest in fine jewellery. And, when buying jewellery; Gold, diamond and coloured gemstones are the best options to choose from.

Making the most of this propitious day, maximum purchases revolve more around gold coins, chains and other small ticket items, bought specially just to mark the special day and add to investments. This year however has been a little different as per Prashant Surana, CEO, Entice, KGK 1905. "The trend this year seems to be tilting a little towards pampering oneself. Having said that, it’s important to note that no one can take the ‘investment’ aspect away from jewels and Indians. Considering this trend, we see customers investing in gold pendants, daily wear gold rings, earrings and bracelets with diamonds and coloured gemstones. This Dhanteras, the liking will be more towards everyday wear ornaments and therefore, lightweight and dainty pieces will be more in demand. For those who like precious stones, rubies and emeralds will be the best choice. One can also opt for the romantic hued rose gold, as it is ruling the jewellery industry these days," explains Prashant.

Modular jewellery
Another trend that is ruling the Dhanteras shopping ideas is that of buying modular jewellery. As per Milind Mathur, Creative Director and Partner, Kohinoor Jewellers Agra, modular is the most popular trend these days. "Such jewellery pieces are very contemporary, durable, compatible and can sort you out for many occasions. This type of jewellery involves assembling different pieces, and customising them for multipurpose usability. Most of the modular jewellery pieces are flexible and can be re-arranged by interchanging inserts. They can be combined in a multitude of ways, allowing the wearer to create a look to match any mood, style or setting."

Lightweight and functional jewellery

While a lot has changed this year, light jewellery has definitely replaced heavy jewellery. It has taken the fashion industry by storm, and for a good reason! "The basic idea behind the concept was to make fashionable jewellery, something that you can wear on a daily basis, which was not the case earlier. Silver jewellery is classic
You may prefer gold jewellery over silver jewellery, but the latter remains a classic choice for many specially on Dhanteras. Anil Kumar Yadav, Founder, Maniram’s Jewellers feels some peeople still prefer to buy 925 sterling silver jewellery crafted with certified American diamonds and also oxidised silver jewellery. "Apart from that marcasite silver jewelry, matte silver jewellery and silver jewellery coated in rose gold which are 70% imported and 30% made in India are also in high demand this season. People are mainly buying bangles, neckpiece, nose pin, earrings this time," claims Anil.

"Articles in 999 pure silver are also in trend this season like utensils, silver coins, ritualistic thaal, kalash, aarti, aachwani, agarbatti (incense stick) stand, diyas, Krishan Jhula, Idols of Gods and Goddesses, showpieces, jewellery storage boxes, etc.
