NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to participate in six summits beginning Tuesday. Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, to be held under the Russian presidency, will bring India and China face to face on the same platform amid ongoing LAC standoff.
India will also be part of East Asia & ASEAN summits — hosted by Vietnam mid-November. This will be followed by BRICS on November 17, also under Russian Presidency, followed by G-20 hosted by Saudi Arabia on November 21-22. Finally, SCO heads of government will meet at an event hosted by Modi on November 30, providing an opportunity to India to play an important role in Eurasia.
The summits will enable India to position itself as a responsible global player and reliable member of the worldwide supply chain amid Chinese aggressions, persons familiar with the subject told ET. India has backed Russian agendas for both SCO & BRICS in the backdrop of wide-ranging strategic partnership with Moscow. All summits will be held virtually due to the prevailing pandemic.
“While the UN-variety of multilateralism has been in the headlines for being under much stress due to big power politics and rise of ultra-nationalist tendencies, away from that spotlight, nations continue to be actively engaged with their favourite multilateral or plurilateral groupings. India is one of those countries, and come November, multilateral summiteering will be at its peak, with the government attending and leading six important summits. These range from the big-time global shows like the G-20, to regional meetings like SCO, ASEAN and East Asia Summit, to smaller ones like BRICS,” former senior Indian diplomat Rajiv Bhatia recently wrote for The Gateway House, Mumbai based think tank.
