Prof SN Sachdeva of NIT Kurukshetra appointed as new VC of Kurukshetra University

KURUKSHETRA: Haryana Governor-cum-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University (KU) Satyadeo Narain Arya appointed Prof Som Nath (SN) Sachdeva of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra as new vice-chancellor (VC) of KU, Kurukshetra on Monday.
Haryana Governor Arya issued a notification HRB-UA-24(1)-2020/6474 in this regard on Monday dated November 9, 2020, in which he stated, “…I as chancellor of KU, hereby appoint Prof Som Nath Sachdeva, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, NIT, Kurukshetra, as VC of KU, for a period of three years or till he attains the age of 68 years whichever is earlier with effect from the date he assumes the charge of his office. Terms and conditions of the appointment will be determined by the competent authority on the advice of the state government.”
As per his profile available on NIT, Kurukshetra website, Prof SN Sachdeva presently worked as head of the department of civil engineering holds about 33 years of experience in administrative, teaching, research, and consultancy fields with more than 12 years as a professor.
Prof Sachdeva completed BSc Engineering (Civil) with Honors from REC (Regional Engineering College), Kurukshetra in 1985, Masters in Engineering (Highways) from PEC (Punjab Engineering College), Chandigarh in 1987, and PhD in Civil Engineering from KU in 2004.
As per the information, after the completion of tenure of former regular VC of KU Prof Kailash Chandra Sharma on March 31, 2020, the governor had appointed varsity’s registrar Nita Khanna as ad-hoc VC till further orders.
Nita Khanna is appointed as registrar up to December 6, 2020.
The teachers, professors and students in KU had been waiting for an appointment of a regular VC, as being a prestigious university of the state it was working without a regular leader from the past about seven months, that affected several key decisions.
On June 19, this year, the Haryana government had formed a three-member search committee to find a regular VC for KU.
The search panel’s two members including Guru Jambeshwar University of Science and Technology (GJUST), Hisar VC Prof Tankeshwar Kumar and Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology (DCRUST), Murthal VC Prof Rajenderkumar Anayath were nominated by the varsity’s executive council (EC) in June and the third member Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) VC Prof Sikander Kumar was nominated by the Haryana governor on July 19.
After completion of the search panel, to scrutinize applications of about 70 candidates, the members held two meetings at Hotel Mountview in Chandigarh, first on August 22 and second on September 3, when the names of final candidates were sealed, which was then confirmed by Haryana’s director general higher education (DGHE) Ajit Balaji Joshi.
KU director public relations Prof Brajesh Sawhney said, "Prof SN Sachdeva is expected to join as KU VC on Tuesday."
