Court criticises govt over Kothamangalam church dispute

Kochi, Nov 09 (UNI) Criticising the government for taking a biased stand in the case of Kothamangalam church dispute, Kerala High Court on Monday said 'that is not right' while considering the contempt of court petition filed by Orthodox Church.
The government argued that the currently available police force is insufficient to take over the church and hand it over to the Orthodox faction as they were busy with election and Sabarimala pilgrimage season duties.
The government sought more time to implement the verdict. However, the court said this was already delayed in the name of Covid outbreak. If the implementation of the verdict is further delayed, central forces will be called, the court said.
The additional solicitor general has been instructed to appear before the court on Tuesday to make the government's stand clear.
Earlier, the court had rejected the appeal filed by the government against taking over the church and handing it over to Orthodox faction.
The court had also made it clear that it was the government's responsibility to implement the verdict.
