Turkey to pressurise new US gov't for Gulen's extradition

Ankara, Nov 8 (UNI) Turkey plans to put pressure on the new US administration, demanding the extradition of US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for orchestrating a coup attempt four years ago, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Sunday.
"Nothing changes from Turkey's point of view. The communication channels will work the same way again. We had a coup attempt. The mastermind is in the United States. There is nothing more natural than asking for his extradition. This process will continue with the new leadership of the country. We will step up our pressure on this issue," Oktay told Kanal 7 broadcaster.
Ankara has repeatedly accused Washington of backing the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which Turkey designates as a terrorist group.
Oktay also accused US of "working" with terror groups in Syria.
"We hope the US will stop working with terrorist organizations ... Now, it is working with terrorist organizations in Syria. As soon as we see a threat, we first try to negotiate, and then we do what is needed ... We see in Biden's pre-election statements that the activities started in the previous period can continue. After he takes office, this will become more specific, you need to carefully observe,".
The Minister also said that his country hopes that the new US administration would abandon the 'unilateral approaches' to settling regional issues, including the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh region.
''We have disagreements with the US on regional issues: Syria, Iraq, Libya, the Eastern Mediterranean, Azerbaijan-Armenia, Cypriot and Turkish-Greek relations... All this concerns us directly.
''The attitude of the new administration to these issues, of course, will interest us and impact us. We are following this very closely. Our expectation is for the administration to stay away from unilateral approaches,'' the official added.
Official results of the 2020 US presidential election are not out yet, but all major US media publications have declared Democratic candidate Joe Biden as the winner.
