Naypyidaw, Nov 8 (UNI) Citizens of Myanmar will be electing their new government on Sunday with Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) being seen by observers as the favorite to secure a majority in parliament again.
This would only be the second general election which the people of Myanmar would experience since the end of military rule.
Nobel Laureate Suu Kyi who has had to face criticism over the discrimination against Muslim minority Rohingya, remains popular among the Bamar ethnic majority of the country. Her party NLD is up against more than 90 other parties. One quarter of the seats in Parliament are reserved for military figures, as per the country's Constitution.
The Myanmar government has faced allegations of disenfranchising certain communities like the Rohingyas, who have traditionally been considered foreigners in Myanmar.
