Myanmar votes on Sunday, Suu Kyi win expected

Yangon, Nov 7 (UNI) People of Myanmar, India’s land and maritime connectivity to the ASEAN region, head to the polls on Sunday for a general election to decide the fate of the ruling National League for Democracy's government led by State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.
The country, which is still suffering from a COVID-19 outbreak, faces many challenges, from simmering ethnic conflicts to economic reform.
The last election in 2015 had come four years after the country made a transition to democracy after decades of military rule. That election resulted in a landslide victory for the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday voiced the hope that the vote would help advance inclusive sustainable development across the country.
He noted with concern that armed conflict was ongoing "in many areas of Myanmar" with intensifying clashes in Rakhine and Chin states, and called for a "peaceful orderly and credible" election process.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, the UN chief also expressed his hope that they might lead to refugee returns "in safety and dignity."
Over 37 million of Myanmar's 56 million people are said to vote for or against candidates of more than 90 parties are for seats in the upper and lower houses of Parliament.
Aung Saan Suu Kyi is still the country's most popular politician. She and her party is heavily favoured to win again, though probably with a reduced majority.
But many believe it will be an empty victory for Suu Kyi and the NLD as they failed in delivering the promises of peace and development in the past five years.
India has close security and foreign policy interests in the neighbouring country. Relations have seen an upswing in recentvdays with high-level visits and attempts to complete long-pending connecivity projects. Foreign Secretary Harsh V. Shringla and Army Chief Gen M.M. Naravane visited the country last month.
India also gave a kilo class submarine to Myanmar as part of a military outreach to its eastern neighbour that strategic analysts say is driven by New Delhi’s bid to counter China’s growing influence in the region.
“Cooperation in the maritime domain is a part of our diverse and enhanced engagement with Myanmar," said External Affairs Ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava.
