Barnala SSP, SP injured as inspection trolley derails

BARNALA: Barnala senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sandeep Goel and SP bureau of Investigations (BI) Jagwinder Singh Cheema sustained injuries when the motor inspection trolley derailed at the railway tracks. The police officials were riding the trolley to inspect the tracks before the movement of trains resumed.
The SSP and SP were also accompanied by DSP (city) Lakhbir Singh Tiwana on the trolley. The trolley had covered only some distance when a rod in it cracked and both SSP and SP sitting on the front fell and sustained injuries on the legs. They were immediately taken to the Barnala civil hospital. SP Cheema suffered a fracture and Goel’s right leg was injured, said doctors at the hospital.
On Thursday, railway minister Piyush Goyal had asked the Punjab government to get the train tracks vacated to allow running of trains. The senior police officials had gone to Barnala railway station to prevail upon protesting farmers to vacate the railway platform and after the platform was got vacated, they went to check the tracks.
Barnala deputy commissioner Tej Pratap Singh Phoolka said, “Both have sustained some injuries. The matter will be investigated as to how the accident happened.” Sources said that more people were allowed to board the trolley than its limit.
When contacted, Ambala divisional railway manager Gurinder Mohan Singh said, “The accident is being looked into. If anyone has been negligent, appropriate action will be taken.”
