MANGALURU: Congress has won majority with the help of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) in the election to the posts of president and vice-president of Bantwal Town Municipal Council (TMC) held on Saturday.
Out of 27 seats in the TMC, Congress had bagged 12, BJP had 11 and four wards were secured by the SDPI. Mohammed Sharif and Jacintha D’Souza of the Congress have been elected as the president and vice-president respectively with the support of SDPI.
Though Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Bantwal MLA U Rajesh Naik voted in favour of BJP candidates A Govinda Prabhu and Meenakshi Gowda, who contested for the posts of president and vice-president respectively, the party could not bag a majority.
Meanwhile, the BJP bagged a majority in the election to the posts of president and vice-president in Moodbidri town municipal council.
Out of 23 seats in the TMC, BJP has a strength of 12 members while Congress has 11 seats. Prasad Kumar and Sujatha Shashidhar Kotian of the BJP have been elected as the president and vice-president respectively on Saturday.
