Hit by truck, cyclist dies

Chandigarh: An unidentified cyclist died after being hit by a speeding truck near the Garcha turn, Industrial Area. The injured was taken to the GMSH in Sector 16, where doctors declared him brought dead. A case against the truck driver, identified as Chandrika Parsad of Daria village, was registered at the Industrial Area police station. TNS

Labourers’ phones snatched

Mohali: The police have registered a case of snatching and assault against five persons under Sections 341, 506, 379-B and 323 of the IPC at the Balongi police station. Complainant Neeraj Kumar said four or five miscreants waylaid labourers and assaulted them before snatching their mobile phones. The suspect then fled from the spot. TNS

Two held with 5 stolen mobiles

Mohali: The police nabbed two youths with five stolen mobile phones and narcotics at Focal Point near Chanalon in Kurali. The suspects were caught during a checking drive. The duo has been identified as Kamalpreet Singh and Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Kainor village in Morinda. The narcotics powder in possession of Kamalpreet Singh weighed 55 gm, while Sukhwinder Singh had 60 gm of it. A case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered at the Kurali (City) police station. A Kharar court sent them to three-day police remand on Thursday. Three of the five owners of the mobile phones have been identified. TNS

Varsity to hold special exams

Chandigarh: Panjab University (PU) will conduct special examinations for the candidates who missed their exams scheduled for March 20 to 24 due to the lockdown and for other reasons, from November 12, said Prof Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examinations, PU. The examinations will be conducted in an offline mode. The centre of examination has been set up on the Panjab University campus. Students can check the date sheet on the examination link (https://exams.puchd.ac.in/datesheet.php) at the PU website. The students must wear mask all the time in the examination centre. TNS

Webinar on working women

Chandigarh: The University School of Open Learning, Panjab University, organised a Webinar on "Women and Workplace: Peculiar Issues and Coping Strategies". Prof Madhurima Verma, Chairperson, USOL, deliberated on the theme. Prof Rajesh Gill, Department of Sociology, focussed on breaking stereotypes related to working women. Prof. Reicha Tanwar, former director, Centre of Women Studies, Kurukshetra University, Haryana, deliberated on the issue of sexual harassment at workplace. TNS

Last dates extended

Chandigarh: Panjab University has extended last dates for submission of examination forms of all undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses (without and with late fee) till November 27. The students can now apply without late fee till November 27, with a late fee of Rs 2,075 till December 4, Rs 6,075 till December 11, Rs 11,075 till December 18 and with a late fee of Rs 22,075 till December 26. Students can also visit the university's website www.puchd.ac.in for information. TNS

2 club managers booked for serving hookah

Chandigarh: The police conducted checks at clubs here on Thursday night and found hookah being served at two clubs - Boulevard in Sector 26 and Reef in Sector 7. Inspector Narinder Patial, SHO, Sector 26 police station, said three hookahs each were recovered from both clubs. Cases were registered against Ravi, manager of Boulevard, and Manish Sharma, manager of Reef. — TNS
